Women Sailors Take to the Race Course at the 2018 Dore Drake Regatta

The Dore Drake Regatta is an annual women’s race at Davis Island Yacht Club. The tradition continued on October 20, 2018 with female sailors returning to the race course for a beautiful, competitive day of yacht racing. This year’s event included 10 boats across three divisions, spinnaker, non-spinnaker, and non-spinnaker coach-on-board. The spinnaker class had an impressive turnout with seven, fully crewed teams.

Aboard the boats, the camaraderie was genuine. For instance, on team Alliance, we meshed instantly and did nothing but support each other through every maneuver, decision, and challenge. On the Melges 32, the team arrived with custom shirts and high spirits, and it showed on the race course with a superb victory in the spinnaker division. The U-20 was temporarily renamed “Girly Gig” again and were tough competitors all day. On Chips All In, the team worked hard, raced well, and looked like they had a great time together. On Boreas, or should I say, “A Boat Name Su,” the team also had custom shirts and competitive spirits. And, even despite the competitiveness between boats, racers were sportsman (or perhaps we should say sportswomen) when it came to the rules of racing, especially during a few close crossings and mark roundings.

All of the racers would like to say thank you to the yacht club members who sponsored our teams by donating their boats for use in the regatta. Also, thank you to those that volunteered their time to manage race committee, support team practices, photograph the action on the water, and organize the delicious potluck dinner and live band. And, finally, team Alliance would like to say a special thank you to ”Coach Craig” Yandow, who passed away last month suddenly after becoming ill while sailing his A-Cat. Thank you Coach Craig for believing in us, this year was for you!
