Summer Learn To Sail 2008
The DIYSF is pleased to offer summer sailing instruction for both DIYC members and non-members. Our goal is to promote the sport of sailing for the benefit of the children of the Tampa Bay area in an environment which stresses safety, good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage, respect for authority and respect for the community. The Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation, Inc. is a 5013C organization and is funded through donations and proceeds from the Summer Sailing Program, as well as other events.
For Opti pram sailors, we offer 10 one-week sessions for beginner and intermediate sailors and 2 one-week sessions of Advanced Learn to Race. For 420 sailors, we offer 7 one-week sessions for beginner and intermediate 420 sailors and 2 one-week sessions of Advanced Learn to Race. The cost is $260 per session plus an annual Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation membership fee of $25 per family.
Registration will be held on Saturday, March 29, from 9am 12pm at the Davis Island Yacht Club. After March 29, registration will be available online only.
Registration is on a first come, first served basis. DIYSF requires a copy of insurance card, a proof of birth-date, and payment in full to complete registration. All sailors must turn in a properly completed medical treatment and emergency information form prior to the start of any session.

Learn To Sail OPTI Prams
Beginner Sailing
- Learn to rig/de-rig the 8-foot pram
- Determine wind direction
- Steering
- Points of sail
- Upwind sailing
- Departure and landing
- Basic boat handling
- Tacking, jibing, weight placement
Intermediate Sailing
- Build and sharpen beginning skills
- Emphasis on sail trim, weight placement
- How dagger board/rudder placement enhance performance
Advanced Learn to Race
- For the more experienced Opti sailor
- Introduction to basic racing
- Introduction to basic rules
- Opportunity to acquire skills needed to qualify for the DIYSF Sailing Team
All sailors will be required to pass a swim test and capsize drill. Capsize skills will be taught the first day of class.
Age Requirements: Ages 8-14. All sailors must be 8 years old by June 1, 2008, no exceptions will be made. Sailors over the age of 12 who weigh more than 130 pounds should register for Learn To Sail 420.
Session Dates: All sessions are one week in length, from 9:00am-4:00pm. Lunch will be provided and is included in the program fees. Cost per session is $260.00, plus an annual Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation membership fee of $25 per family.

*This will be a 4 day session due to the Fourth of July holiday and will be offered at a reduced rate of $210.00, plus the $25.00 annual Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation membership fee.
**Advanced Learn to Race Sessions will be open only to those with previous sailing experience or coach recommendations
Learn To Sail 420
Beginner Sailing
- Learn to rig and de-rig a light, two-person dinghy
- Focus on basic terminology of sailing
- Safety procedures
- Basics of maneuvering a sailboat
- Tacking, jibing, upwind sailing, proper sail trim
Intermediate Sailing
- Brief review of rigging and safety procedures
- Introduction to spinnaker flying
- Introduction to trapeze techniques
- Opportunity to acquire skills needed to qualify for the DIYSF Sailing Team

Age Requirements: Ages 12 and up. Minimum weight of 130 pounds is recommended.
