420 Sailing

DIYSF’s post Opti Program is for sailors 13-17 and is sailed in the double handed spinnaker equipped Club 420 sailboat. The 420 is the sailboat utilized in current high school and college competitions. The Club 420 (C420) name comes from the fact that most events are hosted by competing clubs like DIYC. C420 racing is similar to the HS Team, but in the C420 sailors learn to use a spinnaker and trapeze, and they compete in different events. C420 sailors do not need to be affiliated with a HS Team to participate. Full DIYSF membership is required. C420 events happen year round locally, throughout the state and beyond. We are shooting to have everyone travel to as many of the local Florida events as possible, but at the very minimum, we would like perfect attendance at the Naples Cup in November.

DIYSF provides coaching for weekend practices and select regattas on Saturday from 9-3 and Sunday from 1 -5. The more consistent sailors are with their attendance, the more excited they will be to compete as their skills will be developing to a place where they are confident sailors. The sailing season runs from September through May.

This is not a learn-to-sail program. It is strongly encouraged that all new sailors have some boat handling skills or have completed at least one Learn-to-Sail Program. Sailors not in 9th grade must have approval of coaches and the Board of Directors to sail C420

Sailing and College Admissions

Sailing can help you get into the college of your choice. Today colleges are looking for students who are academically qualified and who have demonstrated a passion for something and followed through on it over time. Sailing can be that passion. Being a great sailor is no substitute for academic achievement. However being an accomplished sailor can help set you apart from the crowd. Some college coaches have some influence in the admissions process and will "pull for you" for you in the admissions process if they want you on their team.

Fees for the high school sailing team are approximately $250 in membership dues and maintenance fees and $165 in monthly asset and coaching fees.
