SUMMER LEARN-TO-SAIL PROGRAM 2017

The Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation (DIYSF) is pleased to offer summer sailing instruction for both DIYC members and non-members. Our goal is to promote the sport of sailing for the benefit of the children of the Tampa Bay area in an environment which stresses safety, good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage, respect for authority and respect for the community. The Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization and is funded through donations and proceeds from the Summer Sailing Program, as well as other events.

Programs Offered:

Programs are open to the public. Yacht Club membership is not required to participate! 

  • Shipmate Sailors Opti Prams (Beginners ages 5-7 only)  (half day classes only)
  • Learn-to-Sail: Opti Prams (Beginner and Intermediate ages 8-13 only)
  • Learn-to-Sail: 420s (Beginner and Intermediate ages 13-18 only)*
  • Advanced Learn-to-Race: Opti Prams (must have completed a week of Learn to Sail prior, ages 8-13)*
  • Advanced Learn-to-Race: 420s (must have completed a week of Learn to Sail prior, ages 12-18)

*Please note our year round 420 program is for High School Students. ONLY Sailors (age 12-13) with PRIOR Opti sailing experience will be allowed to participate in 420 learn to sail.

Session Dates  

Sessions  1-3 and 5-8 are one week in length, Monday-Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sessoion 4 will be held Tuesday –Friday  9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.Lunch will be provided and is included in the program fees. Each child will receive a one t-shirt. Extra t-shirts can be ordered for $10.

Discount Offered

A discount of $40 per individual will be available for any combinations of registrations per family beginning at the 3rd registration and beyond. Example: One family with three children, the first two children registered are full price and the third child receives a $40 discount. Another example: One family has only one child registered, and that one child is registered for four sessions throughout the summer, the first two sessions registered for are full price and the 3rd and 4th registered sessions are each discounted by $40.

Program Details

Shipmate Sailors

The Shipmate Sailors is a learn to sail, stay safe, and have fun on the water class for ages 5-7. The Shipmate Sailors is an introductory class to allow the youngest of sailors to experience being in a sailboat and becoming comfortable on the water. Each sailor will have a fellow classmate in the boat with them. There will be several breaks throughout the morning and afternoon sessions. This 5-7 age group will meet Monday thru Friday either in the morning session which is from 9:00am - noon or the afternoon session which is from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt and light snacks will be provided. We ask that sailors have reached their 5th birthday by the start of their class.

Cost:

$160 per sailor per session (plus a $4.95 non refundable registration fee per sailor), includes one camp t-shirt and light snacks. 

Session Times: 

Morning Sessions from 9:00am - 12:00pm

Afternoon Sessions from 1:00pm - 4:00pm

 

Learn-to-Sail: Opti Prams

For Beginner and Intermediate Opti pram sailors, we offer ten one-week sessions. Maximum 20 sailors per session. An "Opti" sailboat is a one-person dingy, approximately eight feet in length. All sailors will be required to pass a swim test and capsize drill. Capsize skills will be taught the first day of class. Ages 8-13. All sailors must be at least eight years old by the Monday of their registered session.

Cost
$275 per session (plus a $4.95 non refundable registration per sailor). A discount of $40 per session will be available for any combination of registrations for a family beginning at the 3rd session and/or child. 

Beginner Sailing: Skills Learned

  • Learn to Rig and De-Rig the Eight Foot Pram
  • Determine Wind Direction
  • Steering
  • Points of Sail
  • Upwind Sailing
  • Departure and Landing
  • Basic Boat Handling
  • Tacking, Jibing and Weight Placement

Intermediate Sailing: Skills Learned

  • Build and Sharpen Beginning Skills
  • Emphasis on Sail Trim and Weight Placement
  • Daggerboard and Rudder Placement to Enhance Performance

 

Advanced Learn-to-Race: Opti Prams

For the more experienced Opti sailor or with a sailing coach recommendation, we offer four one-week sessions. All sailors will be required to pass a swim test and capsize drill. Capsize skills will be taught the first day of class. Ages 8-13. All sailors must be at least 8 years old by the Monday of their registered session.

Cost
$275 per session (plus a $4.95 non refundable registration per sailor). A discount of $40 per session will be available for any combination of registrations for a family beginning at the 3rd session and/or child. 

Racing Skills Learned:

  • Introduction to Basic Racing
  • Introduction to Basic Rules
  • Opportunity to Acquire Skills Needed to Qualify for the DIYSF Sailing Team

 

Learn-To-Sail: 420

For beginner and intermediate sailors, ages 12-18, we offer ten one-week sessions. Maximum 12 sailors per session. All sailors will be required to pass a swim test and capsize drill. Capsize skills will be taught the first day of class. A "420" sailboat is two-person dingy, approximately 15 feet in length.  

Cost
$275 per session (plus a $4.95 non refundable registration per sailor). A discount of $40 per session will be available for any combination of registrations for a family beginning at the 3rd session and/or child. 

Beginner Sailing: Skills Learned

  • Learn to Rig and De-Rig a Light, Two-Person Dinghy
  • Focus on Basic Terminology of Sailing
  • Safety Procedures
  • Basics of Maneuvering a Sailboat
  • Tacking, Jibing, Upwind Sailing and Proper Sail Trim

Intermediate Sailing: Skills Learned

  • Brief Review of Rigging and Safety Procedures
  • Introduction to Spinnaker Flying
  • Introduction to Trapeze Techniques
  • Opportunity to Acquire Skills Needed to Qualify for the DIYSF Sailing Team

 

Advanced Learn-to-Race: 420

For the more experienced sailor or with a sailing coach recommendation, ages 13-18, we offer four, one-week sessions. All sailors will be required to pass a swim test and capsize drill. Capsize skills will be taught the first day of class.
