Royal Clipper Cruise touring The Leeward Islands December 2023

"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than those you did. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." -Mark Twain

Mark Twain's timeless wisdom echoed in our hearts, and members of our DIYC Cruising Fleet heeded his call! We enjoyed a tremendous adventure aboard The Royal Clipper, an anomaly — and a throwback to a bygone era as the world’s largest passenger square-rigged sailing ship with her five tall masts and 42 sails. A group of 36 adventurous souls embarked on this unforgettable journey, exploring eight of the enchanting Leeward Islands. The expedition, which spanned nine breathtaking destinations, was a perfect blend of fun, adventure, laughter, and the creation of everlasting memories.

The camaraderie among fellow cruisers, the San Deigo Yacht Club Cruising Fleet, other passengers from all over the world, and the ship's crew created an atmosphere of joy and laughter, turning the cruise into a social event filled with shared experiences. We had many celebrations - Antony and Maria Dalton enjoyed their honeymoon, Lou Putney his birthday, and many more joyous days and evenings.

From a vibrant Antigua start to snorkeling in Martinique, Grenada, and Tobago Cays, a Steel Drum Concert in Grenada, and beach BBQs in Tobago Cays, each destination brought unique delights. St. Lucia offered scenic tours, a volcano trek, and chocolate. Each evening we enjoyed culinary delights together, other times we felt like pirates climbing the rigging to the Crow’s Nest, we celebrated a DIYC/SDYC burgee exchange, and much more. The journey concluded in Barbados, leaving hearts filled with gratitude for shared adventures and lasting bonds.

There is far too much to share here, it would fill the entire log. So dear readers, mark your calendars for January 18, 2024! John and Karen Rabbitt invite you all to witness the photographic evidence, videos, and hear the uproarious tales of our tall ship escapades at The Sail Through Winter Series. Join us for an evening of laughter, camaraderie, and a chance to relive the DIYC Cruising Fleet adventures that unfolded in the Leeward Islands and aboard the Royal Clipper. Be prepared to be amazed, amused, and perhaps inspired to join the DIYC Cruising Fleet on more adventures on the high seas! Arrr, see ye there!

Holiday Party

The DIYC Cruising Fleet was buzzing with excitement as they attended their annual holiday dinner and a birthday celebration for Karen Beck, hosted by Anne and John Danner. Sandra, Chef Eli, Greta, and crew served a delectable dinner. Afterward, everyone retired to the point and a warm, inviting fire. The crackling flames of the bonfire danced in harmony with the laughter and chatter of the cruising fleet members. Anne circulated among the guests, ensuring everyone had a warm mug of Glühwein in hand. The fragrant concoction warmed their bodies and created a sense of camaraderie that only the holiday season could inspire along with beautiful holiday music playing in the background.

As the night unfolded, the time came for the much-anticipated Secret Santa gift exchange. Members had carefully selected thoughtful presents for one another, reflecting the unique interests of their sailing companions. The exchange was filled with joyous surprises and heartfelt expressions of gratitude. Underneath the starlit sky, surrounded by the flickering lights of the marina and the warmth of the bonfire, the Davis Island Yacht Club Cruising Fleet celebrated the holiday season in true maritime style. The air echoed with laughter, the sea whispered tales of voyages past, and friendships were strengthened amidst the warmth of Anne's renowned Glühwein.
