On December 6th we had our very first successful Cruising Fleet event: the “Bayshore Raft Up!” Salud, Noshooz, and Kropka anchored up and tied together and stayed the night.

Andy and Karen braved the chill and the breeze, came out to us on their power boat, and hung out with us as well. The wind was blowing and the night was cold, but the propane heater was warming our feet as we congregated in the cockpits of the participating boats. We had so much fun! Thank you Brenda for hosting a truly wonderful night of cruising.

Our next cruising event will be on February 7 and will be at Fantasy Island (aka Fourth Island). Our host will be Joel Hutson. This is another easy event that anyone can attend! Let's pack the beach and party together next to the bonfire.

Safe journeys to Salinity, Shazaam, Island Time Two, and any other cruising fleet vessels that are out sailing during this holiday season. See you all next month!

This month, seven boats from the DIYC Cruising Fleet headed to Venice Yacht Club for a weekend of dining, pool time, and socializing. (1279) Shazaam!, carrying our hosts Sean and Amanda Motta, as well as guests Clay Morris and Olivia Moskowitz, left Thursday evening after the races and sailed overnight arriving just before dawn. Avery and I left the same evening aboard Kropka and anchored out just off Egmont, along with Mike & Tiffany Reiring aboard Island Time II. We were joined by Cruising event regular John Lackey. An EARLY morning departure for Mark and Rachel Macke saw them headed south Friday morning aboard Slip Away along with cruising club newbies Stuart and Elisa Maxwell aboard ¡Salud!. Martin Zonnenberg, Chris Kubisiak, and John Bettini brought Muñequita down via the ICW. Antony Dalton and wife Maria departed their home port in Pinellas aboard Ambiance and rounded out the fleet.

April’s Cruiser’s trip to Cortez and North Longboat Key was a resounding success, Bob and Martha hosted an amazing Cruise! Six boats enjoyed perfect weather for gunkholing fun. Friday’s journey south involved some sailing, though we encountered the classic challenge of wind against us. We toasted KB Ali’s birthday at Tide Tables before a dinghy race and sunset Italian meal. Saturday brought anchoring near Mar Vista Dockside, a beach cookout, and amusing boat-grounding spectacles. Dinner at Mar Vista was divine, enjoyed al fresco. Sunday, fueled by mimosas, we packed up, with four boats sailing home together. Everyone has decided to make this an annual tradition!

Get ready to set sail once again! May brings us another exciting cruise to the Venice Yacht Club, hosted by the one and only Shazam! With anticipation building, we eagerly await the surprises and delights Shazam has in store for us from May 17th to 19th. Let the adventure begin! Email Sean or Amanda Motta for more information.

It is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to our new Cruising Fleet Captain, Calvin Trout!

Calvin joins us, bringing with him a wealth of enthusiasm and experience in sailing. Calvin embodies the spirit of adventure, tradition, and innovation that we cherish here at Davis Island Yacht Club. His dedication to the sport and his commitment to fostering a vibrant sailing community make him an excellent addition to our leadership team.

For those who haven't had the pleasure of meeting Calvin yet, you can find him and his beautiful wife Avery aboard their beloved Pearson 323, Kropka, which calls C dock her home. His passion for sailing and cruising is evident in every aspect of his involvement with the club, and I have no doubt that he will excel in his new role.

Calvin has shown his dedication to sailing already by hosting Tuesday Cruise Day regularly. Another fantastic opportunity for members to come together, share stories, and, of course, enjoy some time out on the water.

Once again, the enchanting shores of Fantasy Island burst into life as Joel and Mayrelis Hutson sprinkled their magic, turning an ordinary day into a spectacular affair! Fantasy Island isn't just a destination; it's a haven where laughter echoes and stories dance around the bonfire. The Luau was an absolute blast, with everyone diving into scrumptious dishes and sipping on delightful libations, creating memories that will last a lifetime. A huge round of applause to Joel and Mayrelis Hutson for making it all possible!

With April beckoning, our next upcoming adventure is set to unfold from April 5th to 7th. Martha Bone and Bob Touton have graciously taken the helm, crafting a weekend of fun and excitement that promises to be truly unforgettable. Our On The Hook weekend will see us exploring the scenic wonders around Longboat Pass, with each stop offering its own unique charm and allure. I have no doubt that Martha and Bob will lead us on a voyage filled with laughter, camaraderie, and perhaps a few unexpected surprises and treasures along the way.

Mark Twain's timeless wisdom echoed in our hearts, and members of our DIYC Cruising Fleet heeded his call! We enjoyed a tremendous adventure aboard The Royal Clipper, an anomaly — and a throwback to a bygone era as the world’s largest passenger square-rigged sailing ship with her five tall masts and 42 sails. A group of 36 adventurous souls embarked on this unforgettable journey, exploring eight of the enchanting Leeward Islands. The expedition, which spanned nine breathtaking destinations, was a perfect blend of fun, adventure, laughter, and the creation of everlasting memories.

The Cruising Fleet has lots of fun planned for 2023-2024 beginning with a “Cruise Into DIYC” on October 13-15! We’ll enjoy things you would do on a cruise ship with a Scavenger/Mystery Hunt, Movie Night, and more! We will be at the club all weekend with many of our Cruisers helping Sail Away from Cancer on Sunday, October 15th. Every month we have one or more new adventures planned and every month we will have a dinner get-together planned as well with trivia, prizes, and lots of laughter as usual.Read More

The weather was rainy and windy for our TYCC outing in June, not one boat made it across Hillsborough Bay to TYCC. The Cruising Fleet did make it by car and enjoyed a fabulous dinner. The conversation was lively and there were many laughs throughout the evening. The wreckfish piccata was amazing as was the blonde alamode with caramel- yum! We had so much fun we closed the dining room down.

The Cruising Fleet will be headed to The Tampa Yacht and Country Club for the weekend of June 16-18 TYCC. Dinner Saturday, June 17th is open to other Cruising Fleet Members who may attend via car. Everyone must RSVP with the Cruising Fleet Captain to join this event by emailing cruisingfleet@diyc.org.

Joel and Mayrelis Hutson hosted yet another fabulous Fantasy Island Luau! A wonderful time was had by all and there was quite a feast! There were scallops being seared ashore together with tables of delectables, including Hawaiian pork, cured meats, and plenty more to share. Cruisers sailed around the Bay on a beautiful Saturday morning and made their way to the island in the afternoon. The boats anchored and dinghies invaded the beach to set up for the night's festivities. Tiki torches were lit alongside a beach bonfire which helped with the cool breeze that evening. Everyone had on leis, floral shirts, and traditional luau attire which added to the party atmosphere while listening to beach music and sharing custom drinks. Later, most spent the night on the hook with Gitana, Jade, Salinity, Shazam, and others. Sunday morning was a leisurely sail back to the club to enjoy lunch or find a bay view with a rocking chair. A hui hoa! (Until we meet again!)

SPYC were great hosts as usual, John and Chase at the marina are always very helpful. They were amazing at how little help our fleet needed in getting docked. Most times the boats were backing into slips and securing lines before they could even get down the dock. They said our fleet was the most self-sufficient they’d ever hosted! We had docktails Friday night from 5-7 at the marina. Then everyone went off on their own to sample all the great restaurants and activists St. Pete has to offer. Some ate at SPYC and discovered John in the piano bar was able to play any song requested. Others went to the seafood and music festival and feasted on Cajun delights, fantastic gyros, great local shrimp, and other seafood. The fried Oreos were a delicious surprise that delighted the people who tried them for the first time. The bands were great and dancing under the stars was a blast!

Francine Messano hosted a fabulous Cruising Fleet event at Gulfport, FL from Friday, January 6 - Sunday, January 8. Two boats on mooring balls enjoyed stunning sunsets, four boats moored at the very convenient transient dock at the Gulfport Marina and one cruiser’s boat permanently resides at the marina. Fifteen people attend this Cruising Fleet event.

January 6^th to 8^th, 2023 the Cruising Fleet will sail to Gulfport, Florida for a weekend of fun! Francine Messano has a full weekend of fun planned for everyone, from volleyball on the beach, to docktails, dinners, and late-night fun too!

Sailing Tips from your Cruising Fleet!

Francine recently invested in the EcoFlow 5000-watt Peak Output DELTAMax 2000 portable power station. It's heavy, about 45 lbs., but compact and can power any of her galley appliances.  Microwave, ice maker, and even a Nespresso machine,   It can be recharged via 12V, solar, or a regular 120V receptacle. She wanted a way to power everything and charge devices without having to use a generator or put an inverter and more batteries in the boat. It's also handy to bring home and power small appliances and charge devices when we lose power during a storm.

Please join our annual Holiday Dinner and Bonfire Friday, December 16, 2022, at DIYC, hosted by John and Anne Danner. It was a blast last year, the music was amazing and it was a magical evening.

We will enjoy a Secret Santa again as it was so much fun last year at the Bon Fire after dinner. Please bring one present per person to give away, no more than $25.00 per gift.

Many of us will stay on our boats and ready them for the Tampa Holiday Lighted Boat Parade on  December 17, 2022, with docktails and fun to follow!

Our Sept/Oct event to SPYC was canceled due to Hurricane Ian. We all continue to donate things that may help those in SW Florida impacted by the Hurricane. Humans and our Fur Friends alike, all need our help.

Nov 11-13, 2022, we will be visiting Bradenton and Twin Dolphin Marina. There is a lot to do being right downtown and Twin Dolphin has a great heated pool. Many restaurants with live music are within a few blocks. We will have a potluck dinner Saturday evening at Twin Dolphin! Kate and Terry Kerr will be hosting this event. Lots of docktails and sailing stories to be told!

We planned our cruises at the annual meeting, and many chose events to host. We enjoyed dinner together and fabulous Sangria made by Cassie and Chef Eli!

The Cruising Fleet is headed to SPYC Sept 30 through Oct 2. It’s the first weekend of the Saturday morning market reopening just a block away from the marina and there is so much to do in downtown St Pete. Jackie and Bob Meyer are hosting.

Cruising Fleet has many exciting upcoming events with lots of fun planned. We’ll be visiting some new places and have things planned we’ve never done before too! Be sure to check the DIYC website for our upcoming adventures!

A possible future event is Downtown Tampa! We’ll enjoy a private guided tour of the Tampa History center. One exhibit is the “Treasure Seekers” with info on pirates, shipwrecks and artifacts plus many additional exhibits. In addition, we will experience The Touchton Map Library which is home to thousands of original maps, charts and documents dating back to the discovery of the New World, plus thousands of additional maps as well. What Sailor doesn’t like Treasure, Ships and Old Maps? Will we find the map to Gaspar’s Treasure there? We will also enjoy dinners, listening to live jazz at a speakeasy and more adventure plus docktails (798) of course!

The cruising fleet will race to Fort Myers in May and continue to the Dry Tortugas, Key West, and many other places along the way back! We look forward to the race and after-party in Ft Myers Beach with our racing fleet. Then on to snorkeling, treasure hunting, spending time with nature, sea life, the sea, Key West, and whatever else we can find along the way! The Cruising Fleet enjoyed SPYC and downtown St Pete for the Easter Weekend. We welcomed new cruisers, the Lovell and Cichon families to our Cruising Fleet. Downtown St. Petersburg was lively all weekend.  The Saturday morning market had lots to offer, as usual.  Saturday night dinner at the SPYC was lovely with great conversation and laughter. After dinner, several stopped to hear the tunes and vocals of Tony playing the piano at SPYC. Several others ventured to find cigars and after-dinner drinks in the surrounding establishments. Sunday morning the Glass Easter Egg Hunt was a hit. Congratulations to cruiser Martha Bone who found not one, but two glass eggs. And to top it all off, the Easter Bunny stopped by the docks in the wee hours leaving everyone a surprise!

Get ready for island fun in March with a luau hosted by Joel and Mayrelis Hutson at Fantasy Island! They have tiki torches and everything for a weekend of festivities. The Cruising Fleet had a great time with some new members to the Cruising Fleet at Sarasota Yacht Club on February 4-6th. Everyone enjoyed meeting John and Robin Hanson and Steve Lancaster. The weather was tough getting into Sarasota Bay, but many enjoyed a pleasant weekend with great fun at an impromptu docktail party hosted by the Rabbitt’s. Dinner Saturday evening was full of laughter. Many, including the wait staff, wanted to crash the wedding in the next dining room, as we could hear their music most of the evening during our dinner! It added a festive tone for sure and our Cruising Fleet did not disappoint having hysterical discussions about the possibilities! What a fun dinner!

The Cruising Fleet enjoyed our visit to Bradenton Yacht Club from Jan 7-9. Seven boats participated, and twenty-four people attended dinner Saturday evening. BYC was very accommodating, did an excellent job with dinner and anything we needed. We enjoyed the heated pool, using the bikes at BYC to explore nearby Emerson Point Preserve, time socializing on boats, and the new outdoor lounge areas with propane firepits.

The Dec Cruising Fleet dinner, Bonfire, and Secret Santa were well received. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner together in the clubhouse prior to adjourning to the fire pits on the point Larry Willis and Antony Dalton was so kind to get started and set up. Everyone had a blast with the eggnog and roasting marshmallows by the fire. Jim and Elizabeth Traun brought wonderful Christmas music for the background…The weather was absolutely perfect, just cool enough the fire was enjoyable, not much of a breeze, and the Christmas music really gave the entire evening an old-time holiday feeling. It was magical!
